Brian Appleyard on the revival of English consciousness

There’s an interesting and timely piece in the Sunday Times today by Bryan Appleyard, which looks at the growth in the expression of an English identity. In Speak For England (http://www.bryanappleyard.com/) Appleyard’s contention is that although such expression is largely linked to sporting events such as the current World Cup, there is in fact more to it than that, and that we are witnessing a revival of English consciousness. This comes after decades during which Englishness has been deconstructed, mocked and generally traduced by the liberal intelligentsia. New Culture Forum’s Peter Whittle offered Appleyard some comments of his own and these have been posted at www.bryanappleyard.com/blog/.
