Anna Politkovskaya murdered

Anna Politkovskaya, an outspoken Putin critic, has been found shot dead at her apartment block in Moscow. (Sat 8/10/06)

"The most important thing is not to show any weakness. The path of resistance is the only way open to us at the moment. If we now go off into the shadows and keep our heads down until there are better times, we will end up going back to the ideological sort of journalism we had in Soviet times."

Anna Politskovskaya, Freedom Forum on World Press Freedom Day, May 2 2001 after her 21st trip to Chechnya.

She published two books on Chechnya, The Dirty War and A Small Corner Of Hell, based on her reports from the war zone, edgy and intense studies printed in Novayagazeta. She vividly described the atrocities and abuses of the war, whether it is the corruption at the heart of post-Communist Russia or the equally spurious arguments and abominable behaviour of the Chechens. Very much a woman's view of the conflict, Politkovskaya excorited male stupidity and brutality on both sides.
Soon to be published in paperback, Putin's Russia : Life in a Failing Democracy. The title says it all... Life and Death.
